Waking Hypnosis: What It Is and Why You Need to Know About It
Did you know there is a kind of hypnosis which is called “waking hypnosis” and it is the most dangerous kind?
What is Waking Hypnosis?
We are in and out of hypnosis about 100-120 times a day. Any time we watch TV, any time we drive somewhere and then we can’t remember how we got there, or any time we’re reading a book and using our imagination, these are all natural states of hypnosis. Any time that you’re relaxed, or using your imagination, or when you’re focused are each considered to be a natural state of hypnosis.
Waking hypnosis is created when there are 3 things present: the first thing is FOCUS, the second thing is a person who is in AUTHORITY, and the third thing is EMOTION.
Examples of focus could be you are waiting for a medical diagnosis, or you are listening to what your teacher is saying or listening to a parent. The person of authority could be anyone who is in a position where you are taking advice from them; they could be a friend who you think knows something better than you, they could be your doctor, they could be a teacher…it could be anyone who is in a position where you believe that they know more than you do. High level of emotion could be anything from excitement to fear—you name it.
What can happen in this moment is you are in this state of waking hypnosis and within that very moment, it has the potential to create within you a new belief. I will give you a couple examples of waking hypnosis to demonstrate.
Examples of Waking Hypnosis
The first (and most obvious) example is medical diagnosis. You have a person who is waiting for a diagnosis; they have a level of fear or uncertainty or worry. They are focused on what the doctor is saying, and then the doctor is the person of authority. So, if a doctor was telling someone how long they must live, then the subconscious mind is taking in that belief and then will create that belief for them so that it will basically start to die off or kill off the body within that time period.
If you look at teachers, teachers are the authority, children can be at any level of emotion—let us say they got in trouble at school so they have embarrassment, shame, guilt, remorse, or fear—whatever it might be, anything that the teacher says to that child in that moment will then create within them a belief. You must note that children are already in a state of hypnosis between the age of 0 (birth) to 7 years old for sure, and most likely up until the age of 12-14.
When we look at what is going on right now in the world, there is a few things we need to be aware of. When people are watching things on TV, like the news, they have a high level of emotion of which is the fear, they are focused, the people that are coming on the news are the people of authority, and so anything they say in that moment can create within us a new belief, whether it is positive or negative.
We have parents—children are in the level of fear thinking about COVID-19 and anything that the parents say in those moments, the children are taking in as beliefs.
Also, when we look at certain things like movies, children are being exposed to all sorts of things right now that we were not being exposed to before. Within these moments, where everyone is experiencing some level of fear or uncertainty, and they’re focused on anything whether it’s a screen or something else, if it’s someone who is in a position of authority, they believe, and whether it’s a child in waking hypnosis or thinks that the person on the screen is real, or whether it is actually someone who has some knowledge, all of these things can create within us a new belief.
Why This Matters
This is so important currently because we all need to take a moment and think about what we are perceiving and what we’re taking in as information if it’s in alignment with what we know to be true.
The best way to be able to understand if it is in alignment with what you know to be true, that part of you, that inner self, inner spirit, guidance piece, the part of you that is connected to the Universe, whatever you want to call it, is to examine the feeling. If you have a negative feeling, it is telling you that something is not in alignment. If you have a positive feeling, it is telling you that something is in alignment and it is your most true place to rest and reside your own beliefs within yourself. If something does not measure up, then something is not right.
Trusting your own intuition and developing that piece will be the single most beneficial thing that you can do to create for yourself an ability to go within and have the knowledge that is coming from the Universe. You can strengthen that connection in trust, and you can strengthen that inner wisdom and that inner knowing through meditation.
