6 Signs You Need to Quit Smoking Forever

When you are a smoker, aside from breathing, blinking, or walking, what else do you do 15-20 times a day? Put a cigarette to your mouth.

Did you know on average during the five minutes a cigarette is lit, a typical smoker will take about 10 puffs on that cigarette? This means someone who smokes one pack per day (20 cigarettes) will get about 200 “hits” of nicotine to their brain every day.

No matter how long you have been smoking or how old you are, quitting smoking is one of the best things a person can do to improve their health.

As difficult as it is to quit, here are 6 signs you need to quit smoking forever.

1. Chronic Cough

A common warning sign of smoking is that dreaded chronic smoker’s cough. If you find yourself regularly coughing, especially when you wake up in the morning, your lungs may be struggling to clear the cigarette smoke toxins. As time passes, it can lead to chronic bronchitis and other respiratory problems.

2. Shortness of Breath

Along with the coughing and respiratory issues, shortness of breath also comes with the territory, especially while doing any physical activities. Cigarette smoke damages the lungs, which makes it more difficult to effectively take in and use oxygen. You may find yourself fighting to catch your breath after short walks or climbing stairs.

3. Smell and Taste Reduction

Did you know that smoking can dull your sense of taste and smell? Your favourite foods may start to no longer taste as good as they were, or you cannot seem to smell things as well as you used to, a sign your body is affected by smoking.

4. Yellowing of Teeth and Fingers

Since cigarettes contain several different chemicals, over time some of those can stain your teeth and fingers. Improving your overall health and appearance means noticing when your teeth are becoming yellow, or your fingers have a yellow tinge and deciding that is enough.

5. Health Problems Risk Increased

Smoking is linked to several serious health problems, which include lung cancer, heart disease, and stroke. The importance of quitting helps reduce your risk of developing these health problems, especially if you have a family history of these conditions or if you experience other warning signs of smoking.

6. A Toll on the Psyche

Have you noticed that you start to chain smoke when you are really stressed out? Or if you are feeling low after having a really bad day you tend to pull out a cigarette? Maybe that peer pressure to fit in while you were in school was the reason you started smoking, but now that you no longer feel that “fit in” pressure, you’re wondering why you’re still smoking.

Sometimes there is a psychological reason we start smoking in the first place. There’s a trauma trigger, perhaps, or extra stress that has entered our lives. Our subconscious can be a naughty place to develop habits or coping mechanisms that are no good for our health, physical and psychological.

There’s good news. With hypnotherapy, we can help you get a handle on quitting smoking. By delving into the root cause of why you started smoking in the first place, we can go into your subconscious and change that habit and turn it into something positive.
